BYD Han EV Common Problems — Air Suspension, 12V Drain, Bushing Wear
The BYD Han EV is BYD's flagship electric sedan, sold globally since 2020. Five years of field data — the longest track record of any flagship Chinese EV — shows seven recurring issues. Most are cheap to fix once you know what to look for.
1. Air suspension sag (Premium / AWD trim only)
Symptoms: Car sits noticeably lower on one corner after parking overnight. Self-levels when started but recurs. Cause: Air strut leak — most commonly the rear right corner due to a marginal seal supplier batch on 2021-2022 production. Fix: Replace the affected strut. Both rears recommended for symmetry. €800-1,400 per side at workshop.2. 12V auxiliary battery drains
Symptoms: Car won't wake. App reports offline. Cause: AGM 12V (~70 Ah) not designed for the parasitic draw of constant-on telemetry + remote app. Fix: Update software, replace 12V at year 2-3 in hot/cold climates. €140-220 parts.3. Infotainment rotation motor failure
Symptoms: The 15.6" centre screen that rotates between portrait/landscape gets stuck or makes grinding noise. Cause: Rotation motor wears out around 80,000-120,000 km, especially if used frequently. Fix: Workshop-only — €350-550 for motor + labour.4. Control arm bushing wear (early build only)
Symptoms: Knocking noise from front suspension over speed bumps. Most common on 2020-2021 Han EV. Cause: Original bushing supplier quality issue. Revised part (post-2022 production) eliminates the problem. Fix: Replace front lower control arm bushings with revised part. €180-280 per side parts; €120-200 labour per side.5. Charge port flap stuck in cold weather
Symptoms: Won't open below freezing. Fix: Pull cord in boot lining. Apply silicone lubricant annually. €8-15.6. Glass roof rattle
Symptoms: Panoramic roof creaks over uneven roads, especially in cold weather. Cause: Felt strip between glass and frame compresses over time. Fix: Workshop replaces felt strip. €80-160. Persistent: full panel re-seat.7. Brake pedal wooden in cold weather
Symptoms: Pedal feels firm and high one day, softer the next. Cause: Brake-by-wire blends regen and friction. When HV battery is full, regen disabled — pedal feel changes. Cold weather amplifies. Fix: Mostly normal EV behaviour. If genuinely inconsistent, check brake fluid (DOT 4) and bleed every 2 years.Preventive maintenance summary
- Update firmware regularly
- Replace 12V at year 2-3 in extreme climates
- Replace brake fluid every 2 years
- Lubricate charge port flap annually
- Air suspension owners: inspect levelling at every service

FAQ
Is the BYD Han EV reliable?
Yes — 5-year field data shows mostly minor issues. Air suspension is the highest-cost potential repair (Premium trim only).
How long does the air suspension last?
Most owners go 100,000+ km before any strut replacement. Original 2020-2021 batches saw earlier failures.
How much does it cost to replace an air strut?
€800-1,400 per side at workshop. Both rears recommended for symmetry.
Why does my Han EV brake pedal feel inconsistent?
Normal brake-by-wire blending behaviour. Once you know it, becomes predictable.
Will replacing the 12V battery affect warranty?
No — wear item. Tier-1 AGM of correct spec doesn't affect warranty.
