XPeng G6 Common Problems and Fixes — What Owners Actually Report
The XPeng G6 is one of the most software-defined EVs to come out of China — an 800V platform crossover with one of the most aggressive driver-assistance suites in its segment. It's also still a relatively young model, which means owner forums in EU, UK, Australia, and Southeast Asia are full of teething complaints.
This is not a hit-piece. The G6 is mechanically sound and the powertrain is largely trouble-free. But there are six recurring issues that come up across nearly every G6 owner group, and most are software-related, cheap to fix, and worth knowing before you sit at a dealership listening to 'we've never seen that before.'
1. 12V auxiliary battery drains while parked
Symptoms: Car won't wake. Frunk and door handles dead. App reports vehicle offline. Once jumped, normal operation resumes briefly, then recurs. Cause: Early XPilot OS wakes the car too frequently overnight for OTA checks and telemetry. The factory 60 Ah AGM 12V can't absorb the duty cycle in cold or hot climates. Fix:- Software: Update to the latest XPilot OS via Settings → System → Software Updates. Multiple patches have reduced wake frequency.
- Hardware: Replace the 12V proactively at year 2 in hot or cold climates. A 70–75 Ah AGM upgrade (same dimensions, higher capacity) extends life.
- Behavioural: Disable Sentry Mode at home. Reduce app polling frequency.
2. Centre screen freezes or reboots randomly
Symptoms: 15-inch touchscreen freezes mid-drive, reboots after 30–60 seconds. Car remains drivable but loses HVAC, navigation, and reversing camera during the freeze. Cause: Memory leak in early XPilot OS versions. Some early production also had marginal Qualcomm SA8155 processor batches with thermal throttling. Fix:- OTA update first. Latest XPilot OS resolved this for most owners.
- Force a hard reboot — hold both steering-wheel scroll buttons for 15 seconds while parked.
- If freezes persist after firmware update, dealer visit for SOC test. XPeng has replaced central computer under warranty.
3. Slow DC fast-charging at certain stations
Symptoms: Car limits charging to 50–80 kW where the 800V platform should deliver 215 kW+. Cause:- Battery temperature not pre-conditioned (must set charger as nav destination)
- 400V station limits the 800V platform to about 90 kW via DC-DC boost
- Charger handshake failure with specific pre-2022 CCS stalls
- Set the charger as a nav destination for battery pre-conditioning
- Use 800V-capable HPC chargers
- Update XPilot OS
- Try a different stall if one consistently slow-charges
4. Suspension creaking over speed bumps
Symptoms: Audible creak from front or rear suspension over speed bumps. Worse in cold weather. Cause: Anti-roll bar bushings drying out and shrinking. Top strut mount bearings developing oxidation stiction. Fix:- Workshop greases anti-roll bar bushings with silicone-based grease (NOT lithium grease). 80% of cases resolve.
- Persistent creaks: replace anti-roll bar bushings (XPeng issued a revised part). Front pair €40–80, rear €30–60.
- Bad strut mount: replacement involves spring compression. €180–280 per side.
5. Brake pedal feels wooden or inconsistent
Symptoms: Brake pedal firm and high one day, soft and low the next. Sometimes regen-to-friction handoff feels notchy. Cause: Brake-by-wire blends regen and friction based on pedal position, speed, and battery state. When the HV battery is full, regen is disabled — pedal feel changes. Fix:- Largely normal EV behaviour. Once understood, predictable.
- If genuinely inconsistent: check brake fluid level and condition. Old fluid degrades pedal feel.
- Bleed brakes every 2 years.
- If creaking or grinding accompanies: inspect pads and slide pins.
6. ADAS warnings in heavy rain or sun glare
Symptoms: Driver Assistance Limited warnings. Lane-centring drops out. Resolves when conditions clear. Cause: Camera-based perception relies on windscreen-mounted cameras. Heavy rain, fog, sun glare, or dirty windscreen reduce detection. Fix:- Keep the windscreen clean inside and out
- Use rain repellent (Rain-X type)
- Replace wiper blades every 12 months
- If warnings persist in clear conditions, camera may need calibration
Preventive maintenance summary
- Update firmware regularly — most G6 issues are software-resolvable
- Replace 12V at year 3 (year 2 in hot/cold extremes)
- Replace brake fluid every 2 years
- Keep windscreen clean
- Pre-condition battery before fast charging

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the XPeng G6 reliable?
Mechanically yes. Most reported issues are software- or 12V-related, both inexpensive to resolve.
How long does the 12V battery last on the XPeng G6?
2–3 years on the factory AGM. Hot/cold climates shorten to 18–24 months. A 70–75 Ah upgrade extends life noticeably.
Does the XPeng G6 have OTA software updates?
Yes — roughly monthly across most markets. Many early issues have been resolved through OTA.
Why does my XPeng G6 charge slower than advertised?
Usually: battery not pre-conditioned, you're on a 400V station, or a specific charger stall is derated.
Will replacing the XPeng G6 12V battery myself affect the warranty?
The 12V auxiliary battery is a wear item. Tier-1 AGM of equivalent or higher spec, with receipt, should not affect vehicle warranty on other components.
