NIO ET5 Cabin Filter Replacement — DIY Step-by-Step Guide
The NIO ET5 cabin filter is the single most-replaced part on the car — and the single most-skipped. Replacing it takes 15 minutes once you know where it is. Hidden behind the glove box on a slightly unusual mount that catches first-timers.
When to replace
NIO official: every 24 months / 30,000 km. In real-world use, more frequently:
- Every 12 months in normal use
- Every 6-9 months in dusty regions (Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, China north)
- Every 6 months near busy roads or industrial areas
Signs yours is overdue:
- Cabin smells musty after parking
- HVAC weaker on max fan than it used to be
- Windscreen fogs more in winter
- Allergies feel worse inside the car
What filter to buy
NIO ET5 uses a paper-and-activated-carbon dual-layer filter, ~254 x 235 x 35 mm. Consult dealer for current OE PN.
Tier-1 aftermarket equivalents:- Mann CUK 24 003
- Mahle LAK 1175
- Hengst E2982LC
- Bosch 1987435061
- Filtron K1357A
Avoid no-name filters — they skip the activated carbon layer.
HEPA upgrade decision
NIO sells an OEM HEPA option (~2x price). Worth it if:
- You live in a polluted city
- Anyone has respiratory allergies
- You sit in traffic frequently
Downsides: slightly reduced max-fan airflow, half the replacement interval.
Tools
- New cabin filter
- Nitrile gloves
- Small flashlight
- Optional: vacuum with crevice attachment
Step-by-step procedure
- Park, switch car off completely. HVAC inactive.
- Open passenger door. Empty the glove box.
- Open glove box. Look at the right side for the dampener arm.
- Dampener arm detail (most-missed step): Pinch the hydraulic dampener arm at its mount on the right side and pop it free of the glove box clip. The glove box now drops further than normal.
- Cabin filter cover panel is now visible behind the glove box. Two plastic tabs.
- Press both tabs inward and slide cover downward. Comes free in one piece.
- Pull out old filter. Note airflow arrow direction — it points downward (toward floor) for ET5.
- Vacuum the housing if there's debris.
- Insert new filter with airflow arrow pointing down.
- Refit cover panel — slide upward until both tabs click.
- Re-engage glove box dampener arm.
- Close glove box. Test fit.
- Refit your glove box contents.
- Start car. Run HVAC on max fan 30 seconds. Listen for whistling (filter not seated) or check for unusual smell.
How long does it take?
- First time: 20-30 minutes
- Once familiar: 10-15 minutes
Cost: DIY vs workshop
| Approach | Cost |
|----------|------|
| DIY (filter only) | €15-30 |
| Independent workshop | €40-70 |
| NIO Service (OEM filter + labour) | €80-130 |
DIY saves €25-100 per change.
Common mistakes
- Installing filter upside-down (airflow arrow opposite)
- Not releasing dampener arm (cracks glove box hinges)
- Skipping vacuum (debris cycles back into new filter)
- Wrong-size universal filter
- Not running HVAC after install to check seating

FAQ
How often should the NIO ET5 cabin filter be replaced?
NIO official: every 24 months / 30,000 km. Real-world: every 12 months normally; 6-9 months in dusty regions.
Can I install a HEPA filter?
Yes — NIO OEM HEPA and tier-1 aftermarket HEPAs fit the same housing. Trade-off: slightly reduced airflow, half the interval.
Why does my cabin smell musty?
Usually clogged filter growing mould. Replace and run HVAC on heat 10 minutes to dry the duct.
Does the cabin filter affect range?
Marginally — clogged filter draws more 12V power. <1% impact but adds up.
Will DIY affect warranty?
No — cabin filter is a wear item. Tier-1 aftermarket of correct spec doesn't affect warranty.
